SA AIDS 2017

The 8th SA AIDS Conference, Durban, June 13-15

SA AIDS 2017 enjoyed high level support, with the SA Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing a plenary and reminding the audience of the need to respect the human rights of key populations.

The conference focussed strongly on the challenges of adolescent HIV in South Africa. Other areas that took the headlines included:

  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis: PrEP is being piloted for key populations and adolescents in South Africa, and is in the WHO Essential Drugs List and the SA NSP (for sex workers and MSM).
  • The new SA National Strategic Plan (NSP) and its commitment to an evidence-driven response.
  • Adolescent girls: Despite increasing funding and programming for adolescent HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa, HIV incidence has not declined. Around 800 girls (15-19 years) are infected every week – about eight time more than adolescent boys - and AIDS is the second leading cause of death for adolescents.
