June was a busy month for EHPSA, starting with preparation for the first EHPSA symposium, which was held in Durban on the 8th and 9th.

Thirty researchers, with projects funded by EHPSA, and related policy makers from the region attended the symposium along with representatives from donor organisations, UNAIDS, WHO and EHPSA staff.
Researchers presented their projects and policy makers gave feedback on challenges and opportunities for policy and programming

After the symposium the EHPSA Communications Manager and I stayed on for the 7th SA AIDS Conference where we gained new insights into the challenge of prevention for key populations – very relevant to EHPSA’s mandate.
Much of the remainder of the month was taken up with the rigours of finalising research contracts, an unavoidable technical exercise, which is to the benefit of all parties!
At the end of June, DFID Health Adviser Dirk Mueller left the programme to take up a new posting in London.
